During my September 2025 trip to Greece, I was amazed at the number of Greek monasteries, orthodox churches, temples and chapels. These structures were enormously varied both in style and size. During day three of the tour, we passed through the small but quaint city of Olympia. A bathroom break allowed me the opportunity to quickly explore a church we passed just prior to the rest stop. The church was beautiful and large although I don’t recall its’ name. I decided to use this opportunity to create an abstract photographic interpretation of its style. My effort was aided by using black & white Infrared print film. Infrared film differs from standard black and white print film in the way it reflects visible light. The light spectrum that is visible to the naked eye is made up primarily of ultraviolet light. Infrared light cancels out a significant amount of ultraviolet light and replaces it with Infrared light which is the light that is not normally visible to the naked eye. Thus, the images presented here provide a high contrast, austere, slightly moody and surreal interpretation to the scene. And that was the whole point of what I was trying to achieve for this project.
